Meet your cool neighbour at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve
Explore the amazing world of reptiles and amphibians at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. They aren’t always the most popular of neighbours, but they are certainly very ‘cool’. These amazing cold-blooded creatures, collectively called herptiles, live all around us and are uniquely adapted to Australia’s hot, dry climate. Learn about the frog who carries his tadpoles round in his pockets, the caring snake who cuddles her eggs to keep them warm and the striking lizard who can change its colour.
On now at the Rainforest Discovery Centre, open daily between 9.30am-3.30pm.
Sunshine Coast Art Prize
Try something different these school holidays, visit the free Sunshine Coast Art Prize exhibition at Caloundra Regional Gallery.
Vote for your favourite artwork and complete the survey to go into the draw for your chance to WIN a $100 Caloundra Regional Gallery shop gift voucher.
You can vote in the gallery or online. Hurry though, voting closes 19 September.
The exhibition is on show 27 August to 10 October and features 40 finalist artworks from across the country.
Winners will be announced on 23 September. Caloundra Regional Gallery is at Omrah Avenue, Caloundra, opposite the library.
Try the great botanic race
If you’ve got older kids, head to the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden to try the great botanic race. Grab a map at the entrance and explore the gardens on this self-guided orienteering challenge. Kids will need to find mapped points to solve the puzzle along the way. Great for ages 10 years and older.

How to catch a duck – a family friendly investigation walk.
- Come and learn: Discover how ducks, fish and yabbies were caught and explore the bush to find honey, possums and koalas. To live in the wild, Australian bush requires great skills! Our beautiful botanic gardens have many clues to finding these wonderful creatures.`

Walking with dinosaurs – a bushwalk for families
- Dinosaurs roamed the earth for 200 million years, during a time when plant life and land masses looked very different. Join one of our friendly, knowledgeable guides for a leisurely walk through the Botanic Gardens focusing on the types of plants that existed 100 million years ago during the age of dinosaurs and before flowering plants.

Try virtual reality at Bankfoot House
Looking for a day out the whole family can enjoy?
Bankfoot House Heritage Precinct in Glass House Mountains is a FREE family friendly experience that really does have something for everyone. Kids will love the new VR experience and it’s hard not to enjoy a personal tour around the oldest house in the area. The shed restoration project is always hit and with spacious grounds, great views and large games to borrow, it’s a great place to enjoy a picnic.
Bankfoot House is open Wednesday to Sunday 10am – 3pm.
Museum Mystery Madness!
Sunshine Coast Council and Community museums have teamed up to offer a month of mystery madness.
Visit your local museum in September and complete a fun-filled quiz for a chance to win a prize. The special quiz is now available to visitors at Buderim Pioneer Cottage, Landsborough Museum and Nambour Museum.
Your observation skills will be put to the test as you search to fill in the missing gaps. It could be a name of a train, what was used to fuel stoves or finding phones that have no numbers – each museum’s quiz is different.
Enter for a chance to win a $100 Caloundra Regional Gallery Shop gift voucher, plus everyone receives a free pocket magnifier.
Visitors can enter one or all three museum quizzes and become a Museum VIP with a discount card.

Plant forests for wildlife
Bring the kids out to Kirby’s Road Environmental Reserve, Obi Obi to plant native shrubs, trees and groundcovers for food and habitat for the Elf Skink and the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo.
Head to the end of Kirby’s Road, Obi Obi on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 from 8.30am to 12.30pm. At this free event, council will provide morning tea and all the equipment you need for the morning’s activities. There also be some talks about the native animals that live in the reserve and guided walks.
