University of the Sunshine Coast design graduate Jacob Brewer, 25, of Bracken Ridge, has marked a milestone in his career with a job at the Brisbane Lions.
“I never imagined a career as a graphic designer would have given me the opportunity to work in the AFL industry,” said Mr Brewer, who received his USC Bachelor of Computer-Based Design at a graduation ceremony on campus at Sippy Downs this month.
“My role is in-house and my days are extremely varied and interesting. On a day-to-day basis, I’m designing electronic direct mail, newspaper ads, website and social media graphics and printed collateral. I love focusing in-depth on their brand and thinking creatively to ensure everything stays within their style guide.
“I’m so grateful for the opportunities I have been given. I couldn’t have chosen a better career path.”
The former Sandgate District State High School student freelanced in his industry while studying for his degree, working part-time at the agency Admedia Creative in Woolloongabba, Brisbane.
“Studying at USC has given me confidence and a wide range of skills to take anywhere,” said Mr Brewer, who majored in Graphic Design and minored in E-Media and Creative Advertising.
“I’ve also learnt vital time management skills which are imperative to working in the creative industry, where jobs are often billable by the hour.
“My long-term goal is to reach the role of art director. For now I’m constantly working, freelancing, networking and partnering with mentors.”
Mr Brewer chose to study at USC for a variety of reasons, including the easier travel from Bracken Ridge to Sippy Downs compared to travelling into Brisbane city.
